FJÖRUKRÁIN (VIKING VILLAGE)

Fjörukráin (Viking Village) (Strandgata 55, tel. 354/565-1213, www.vikingvillage.is) is great fun for kids and adults alike. The closest thing Iceland has to a theme park, the Viking Village celebrates the island’s history, with a sense of humor. It’s kitschy, with lots of Viking horns, reproduced wood huts, and wooden furnishings. Guests can stay at the hotel, visit the gift shop, stay for a meal at the restaurant, or just check out the decor.

The Viking Village takes center stage every mid-June when the space hosts the Viking Festival, which takes place over five days. There are performances of jousts with participants in Viking costumes, food stands, metalwork demonstrations, and woolen goods and jewelry for sale.
